Officials have shared a recent update following a completed investigation involving a struggling Detroit mother and the tragic death of her two children while living in a family van!
Authorities have determined that Tatetona Williams’ two children A’millah and Darnell accidentally endured carbon monoxide toxicity. It has been indicated that local police initially believed that the two young children passed away due to severe cold weather conditions while sleeping inside their family’s van caused by lack of fuel.
Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed that they’ve received a request for a criminal warrant related to the two young children’s deaths, however no names have been mentioned.
In a forwarded statement, Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison shut down circulated claims that a warrant was issued for Tateona’s arrest.
“I want to clarify recent reports regarding the tragic incident at the Greektown Casino parking structure involving Darnell Currie Jr. and A’Millah Currie,” Bettison said in a statement. “The Detroit Police Department has completed its investigation into their deaths and submitted the findings to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office for review. DPD has not requested charges to be filed against any family member of the children.
“As we do with every case, we have simply turned over our investigative file to the Prosecutor’s Office for its review and determination,” the chief said. “Any charging decisions will be made solely by the Prosecutor’s Office.”
As we previously reported , Tateona’s 2 year old daughter and 9 year old son passed away on Monday (February 10th) while sleeping in the Greektown Casino Parking lot on the ninth floor.
Sources state that a total of seven family members had been living in the van at the time, including the two deceased children, two additional siblings, Tateona, their grandmother and the grandmother’s child.
“It was like a normal day … I woke them up to get them ready for school, and my son wasn’t moving. I kept saying, ‘Please get up. Please, please, for me, just get up. Don’t do this to me,’” said Tateona.
She says that she attempted CPR on her 9 year old and then a friend rushed them to the hospital. Things turned for the worse as they made their way to the hospital Tateona noticed that her two year old daughter was unresponsive.
“They brought her in right after they pronounced him dead … And they said she wasn’t breathing. And then they pronounced her dead too,” Tateona said, with tears in her eyes. “She didn’t even get to live her life. She didn’t even get to do anything. She lost her life because I had to sleep in the car.”
At this time it has been publicly addressed whether they were exposed to carbon monoxide due to lack of gas or a mechanical failure.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said the city first came in contact with Tateona regarding her living conditions three years ago in 2022, as she reached out about rental assistance. She made contact again with the city the following yearr in 2023, this time seeking shelter and the family was offered temporary shelter beds, which “they did not use,” reports The Detroit News.
