A Detroit mother battling homelessness with her family has been left with a heavy heart after two of her kids froze to death as they slept in a van in a casino parking lot! 🙏🏾

A 2-year-old girl and her 9-year-old brother passed away Monday (February 10th) as they slept in the Greektown Casino parking lot on the ninth floor, reports The Detroit News.

Seven family members lived in the van including the two children, two of their siblings, their mother Tateona Williams as well as their grandmother and the grandmother’s child; reports FOX.

It was like a normal day … I woke them up to get them ready for school, and my son wasn’t moving. I kept saying, ‘Please get up. Please, please, for me, just get up. Don’t do this to me,’” she recounted to local news outlets.

She says that she attempted CPR on her 9 year old and then a friend rushed them to the hospital. Things turned for the worse as they made their way to the hospital Tateona noticed that her two year old daughter was unresponsive.

They brought her in right after they pronounced him dead … And they said she wasn’t breathing. And then they pronounced her dead too,” Tateona said, with tears in her eyes. “She didn’t even get to live her life. She didn’t even get to do anything. She lost her life because I had to sleep in the car.”

Tateona says that the family has been homeless for three months and that she has actively been contacting Detroit’s homeless response teams for help and other sources outside of the city but ultimately received no help.

I regret having to sleep out there so bad,” she added. “I tell them I’m sorry, but I tried. I tried to get hotels, I tried to pay people to stay there, but it wasn’t working.”

I asked everybody for help. I called out of state, I called cities I didn’t know, I called cities people asked me to call. I even asked Detroit.

Sources state that the family stayed with an another relative before living in a van as they were asked to find somewhere else to stay.

Tateona says she contacted Detroit’s homeless service department and had been in contact with them at least three times prior to her children’s tragic deaths. However, because her case was not identified as an emergency.

It took my two kids dying for y’all to help me? It just doesn’t work like that,” she said. “Everybody’s got their opinions, but I know in my heart — and everyone who was around me knows — I loved those kids more than I loved myself. It hurts losing two kids in one night. I don’t wish this on anybody.”

Tateona is urging fellow struggling parents to get help before it’s too late.

If you can get help, please go get help because I don’t want anyone else to go through what I’m feeling,” she shared.

Her’ cousin, Javeina Moorer, has launched a GoFundMe to help support the grieving mother as she actively works to find a home for her and her other children, reports The Grio.
