Target is in hot water after folks called out a children’s Halloween costume for closely resembling Blackface!
The costume, marketed as the “Kids’ Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown Halloween Costume,” was sold as part of Target’s Halloween collection. Promotional images showed a young child wearing the costume, which featured a black-and-orange bodysuit, dark gloves, a hood with an exaggerated smile and a mini top hat.
The popular retailer has confirmed that the costume has been pulled from stores and online after images of it circulated on social media.
“As a company, we know we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry,” Target said in a statement. “The costume is offensive and should never have been part of our assortment. It is no longer available for sale.”
Target confirms it’s reviewing how the costume was approved and what needs to change to prevent a similar incident from happening again; reports Reuters.
Throughout the last few years, Target has faced backlash over their decision to roll back several diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.
