New York Hairdressers Are Now Required To Learn How To Work With All Hair Types!

Noir Nation, New York is making sure hairstylists are prepared to work with more than just straight hair!

A new law officially taking effect Tuesday, September 1st now requires cosmetology students across the state to receive training on diverse hair textures, including curly, coily and kinky hair.

💅🏾 NO MORE “I DON’T KNOW HOW TO DO YOUR HAIR!”

Under the new requirements, instruction on different hair textures must be incorporated into cosmetology education. The number of hours required to obtain a cosmetology license will not change, however the curriculum is being expanded to include training on a wider range of hair types for all .

It has been indicated that the newly updated requirements have been made in efforts of including all hair types , especially for Black men and women who are often turned away from salons simply because a stylist isn’t familiar with their natural texture.

For Black women and others with textured hair, finding a stylist who understands everything from coils and curls to protective styles can sometimes mean searching specifically for salons that specialize in textured hair.

This new requirement puts that knowledge directly into cosmetology training instead of leaving stylists to figure it out later.

And honestly? About time! 👏🏾

The new rule is about more than learning another technique, it’s about making sure future hairstylists enter the industry with the skills to serve clients with different textures and hair needs.
