As viewers step into the world of STARZ’s new crime drama Fightland, the Marshall family makes one thing clear from the beginning: they hold the power, and Kingsley Marshall sits at the center of it all.
Portrayed by actor Nicholas Pinnock, Kingsley is the patriarch of the Marshall family and the head of a powerful crime operation. Even when he is nowhere to be seen, his presence is felt within nearly every decision, conflict and relationship surrounding the family.
During an exclusive conversation with NoirOnlineOrg, we asked Pinnock how Kingsley’s position within the family influences the other characters and the roles they play as viewers are introduced to the Marshalls in the first episode.
“Kingsley, being the patriarch of the Marshall family and the head of this crime family, dominates everybody else’s world,” Pinnock explained.
According to Pinnock, Kingsley’s influence extends far beyond his physical presence. Throughout the season, his absence becomes just as powerful as his presence, with the other characters constantly making decisions based on what they believe Kingsley would want or trying to gain access to him.
“Even when he’s not there, he’s there,” Pinnock said. “Everything is centered around him. People wanting information from him. People wanting to get to him. People needing him to make decisions. Everything is about Kingsley.”
That influence becomes even more complicated as Kingsley disappears, leaving the rest of the family to make decisions they believe will protect the business and keep everything moving. But according to Pinnock, once Kingsley returns, those carefully calculated plans are immediately put into question.
“When he comes back, he completely upends everything,” he said. “All the decisions that everybody made, that they thought were fixed, that they thought were good for the business, that they thought were good for what’s going on, he comes and unravels it and does it his way because his way is the ultimate way.”
And Kingsley’s power doesn’t simply come from his title. Pinnock describes the character as someone who knows exactly how to manipulate the people around him, convincing them that his decisions are always the right ones.
“He also has this way of manipulating everybody around his atmosphere into doing whatever he wants and believing that what he needs to do and how he needs to do it is the best way of doing it,” Pinnock explained.
But challenging Kingsley comes with consequences, and Pinnock made it clear that those consequences don’t stop at the boundaries of family loyalty.
“If you don’t agree with him, you will suffer the consequences, regardless of who you are, family or foe,” he said.
Noir Nation, be sure to tap into Fightland, starring premiering on STARZ July 31, 2026.
