Cousins! As Saweetie gears up to release her official debut album, the Bay Area rapper is opening up about her journey in navigating through the music industry and some of the difficulties she has faced regarding the social media era!
In an interview with Allure Saweetie spoke on her rise to fame following her 2018 debut and how she was advised to twerk on social media in efforts of keep the momentum surrounding her popularity growing on the internet. “I was told I should twerk more on my Instagram.”
“I was told that my voice was very boring.” Sweetie adds, “I was told that I rapped too monotone and needed more energy. I was told that I needed to share more of my life on the internet.”
In response, the 30-year-old says that she fired back against the lazy marketing plan to say, “I’m going to twerk when I want to. That’s not going to be my marketing. And if that’s what you truly love to do, then empower yourself through that. But that’s not innate to me.
“If I get caught at a party or if I’m turning up, okay, cool. But I’m not finna do that because you guys think I should. That’s lazy marketing.”
Saweetie shares that she’s not afraid to go up against music executives in order to protect her artistry.
“Everything now just feels like, ‘Make it go viral, go viral, go viral,’” she added. “Okay, cool, go viral. But if your only intention is numbers, what about the art or the reason why we’re here today?”
Earlier this week Saweetie, clapped back at circulating headlines that suggested her debut had been delayed due to lack of interest from fans.
According to HipHopDx, the media outlet MyMixtapes wrote in a now deleted post, “Saweetie says her debut album has been significantly delayed, not because she doesn’t care about making music, but because she feels no one cares about her music.”
Saweetie responded on Twitter (X) with a tweet that read, “who paying yall?” She also reshared a screenshot of an original quote from her cover story with Allure that read: “‘I just feel like nobody was caring about my music,’ Saweetie says of the people around her at that time. ‘To me, music is sacred.’”
