Cousins! An active investigation is currently underway as officials search for a gunman responsible for the murder of a crossing guard onboard a subway train!

According to ABC News, 45-year-old Richard Henderson was fatally shot Sunday evening, January 14th around 8 PM. Officials state that the incident took place on a Manhattan-bound No. 3 train as it approached the Franklin Ave-Medgar Evers College station.

Sources state that Richard had attempted to stop a fight between two passengers following a dispute over loud music. Police say that though he wasn’t the intended target, it’s believed that the gunman fired in the direction of the man he had been arguing with and tragically shot Richard instead.

Reports read that the unidentified gunman escaped just before the train pulled into the Franklin Avenue stop within the Eastern Parkway area of Crown Heights.

Richard is noted as being a father of three and a young grandfather of two. He worked as a crossing guard at a private school in Chelsea Avenue’s The World School. Fellow co-workers and students have come together to help raise over $160,000 for the Henderson family.

“He was a people’s person. He was very friendly. He always wanted to do good things. He always tried to solve a problem,” says a neighbor of Richard’s to Eyewitness News. “And for this to happen, it just hurts.”

The MTA issued the following statement regarding Richard’s tragic passing, “Our hearts go out to the family of Richard Henderson who was shot on a 3 train as he was making his way home Sunday night. This is another sad reminder that gun violence has no place in this city. The MTA is cooperating fully with the investigation to ensure the perpetrator can be brought to justice.”

Reports read that Richard’s tragic death marks the first homicide in the subway system of 2024.
