Winter in New York City doesn’t just bring freezing temperatures and snow-covered sidewalks — it’s also opening the door for residents to earn extra income. As major snowstorms approach, the city is once again hiring Emergency Snow Shovelers to help keep streets, sidewalks, and public areas safe and accessible.
According to PIX11 News, New York City is offering starting pay of $19+ an hour, with the opportunity to earn more depending on how long storm cleanup efforts last. Workers are assigned to clear bus stops, crosswalks, fire hydrants, step streets, and other high-traffic public spaces that are critical for daily transportation and emergency access.
The Department of Sanitation (DSNY) has officially opened registration for residents interested in joining the emergency workforce. The position is seasonal and on-call, meaning workers are contacted when snowstorms hit and extra manpower is needed across the five boroughs.
To qualify, applicants must be 18 years or older, eligible to work in the United States, and physically able to perform heavy manual labor. Availability during snow events is key, as shifts are often long and weather conditions can be intense. While the work is demanding, it provides a fast and straightforward way for New Yorkers to put extra cash in their pockets during the winter months.
City officials say the program plays a major role in helping NYC recover quickly after snowstorms especially for seniors, commuters, and emergency responders who rely on clear pathways to move safely.
For many residents, this opportunity offers more than just a paycheck. It’s a chance to support the city, stay active during the colder months, and turn winter weather into a temporary income boost.
Registration details and appointment information are available through the Department of Sanitation, and interested applicants are encouraged to sign up ahead of upcoming storms as positions can fill quickly.
Pay starts at $19.14 per hour for snow shovelers with the potential to increase to $28.71 per hour after the first 40 hours worked in a week.
Applicants must be:
- At least 18 years old
- Eligible to work in the United States
- Able to perform heavy physical labor
- Two small photos (1-1/2 inch square)
- Two original forms of ID, plus copies
- Social Security card
As another round of winter weather approaches, NYC is reminding residents: when the snow falls, there’s work to be done and money to be made.
