As soon as folks started getting their SNAP back in rotation, a new issue has surfaced that may lead to millions of people being stripped from receiving benefits!
The U.S. Department of Agriculture is rolling out new guidelines tied to Trump’s July megabill. According to reports from ABC News, recently updated conditions will now enforce work requirements for able-bodied adults, cut refugee eligibility, and force states to cover some program costs.
The breakdown:
Able-bodied adults up to age 64 without dependents must meet stricter work requirements (up from 54). Parents and caregivers only get exemptions if they have children under 14 — meaning teens and their parents are now on the hook. Homeless individuals, veterans, and former foster youth are no longer exempt.
According to the Congressional Budget Office, about 1.1 million people could lose SNAP benefits by 2034 — 800,000 able-bodied adults and 300,000 parents or caregivers with older kids.
Hunger-relief advocates sound the alarm:
“Millions of people are going to lose food. There’s no question this is going to create more harm and suffering and hunger,” said Joel Berg, CEO of Hunger Free America.
“It’s adding work requirements for veterans, parents of teenagers, and homeless people. How homeless people are going to get and keep jobs is really beyond me.”
SNAP isn’t just numbers on a spreadsheet — it’s kids getting meals, veterans getting by, families staying afloat. And now, millions are being set up to fail.
For Black, Latino, and marginalized communities, the stakes are even higher. These groups rely on SNAP disproportionately, meaning the impact won’t be evenly felt — it will hit hardest where it’s needed most.
