Noir Nation! TikTok has made an official return to both Apple and Google app stores after its removal nearly a month ago!
As we previously reported the popular Chinese-owned social media platform was previously removed from both stores on Jan. 18, in response to TikTok’s official’s decision to temporarily pause service in the U.S.
According to NBC News, TikTok’s initial removal from Google, Apple, and Oracle was out of fear of enduring harsh penalties for violating the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act.
With the decision to restore the famous video platform, Apple and Google are authorizing the app to be downloaded on mobile devices throughout the United States.
On Thursday (February 13), Apple and Google received a letter from Attorney General Pam Bondi informing the companies that the Trump administration will not prosecute them for supporting TikTok, reports NPR News.
However it has been indicated that despite the Trump administration’s letter of approval to not prosecute Apple and Google, both companies are still at risk of potentially violating the U.S Law.
“You now have some of the biggest corporations in the world accepting the word of the Trump Justice Department that this statute won’t be weaponized against them,” says Georgetown University law professor Anupam Chander.
“This could help them stay on the good side of the Trump administration and address the financial hit they’re taking by not hosting TikTok on app stores.”
Apple and Google’s recent decision has been recognized as a risky business move.
Under the Washington lawmakers order companies doing business with TikTok can face fines of $5,000 per user who is still able to access the app.
As we previously reported Washington officials have actively voiced their concerns of ByteDance’s direct affiliation with the Chinese government and how they fear Americans’ data and political views could be in danger of being unlawfully shared.
