A Grand Junction, Colorado funeral director pleaded guilty recently after deceiving and conning numerous families by selling body parts of the deceased without the consent of their families!
The owner, Megan Hess dissected the body parts of hundreds of people. The Sunset Mesa Funeral home and a human body part business titled Donor Services were the alleged suspects in the crimes.
Megan admitted in federal court to getting the body parts dissected to those who wanted cremation to the deceased individuals. According to Fox Business; there are records showing she had a body dealer to harvest and collect the heads, spines, legs, and arms to later sell them. In which she allegedly sold the parts for surgical and educational purposes.
Megan has been in this business for over 10 years; has ran the funeral home since 2009. The organization is considered a “body-broker service” selling body parts as part of their operations. The families received fake ashes from their loved ones assuming that their bodies have been at peace but unbeknownst being departed and sold.
There is a grand jury indictment with Hess alongside her mother Shirley Koch, who is also involved in this case. Allegedly, they both illegally sold bodies and their parts at the price of $1,000 or more; some of the cremations never actually occurred.
According to the U.S Justice Department, both mother and daughter were arrested in 2020 for another crime, where they pleaded not guilty to the charges –three counts of illegal transportation of hazardous material. They are said to have shipped bodies and their parts that tested positive for infectious diseases such as Hepatitis B and C, and HIV and convinced buyers that the parts were disease free.
Currently they must wait for trial scheduled in January, Hess has a plea hearing set for July 12, 2022.
