Wendy’s Set To Close Hundreds of U.S. Locations Between 2025-2026!

If your go-to Wendy’s spot is starting to feel a little empty, there’s a reason!

According to reports from KTLA the fast-food chain just announced plans to close roughly 200 to 350 underperforming locations across the U.S., part of a bigger push to tighten up operations and focus on stronger stores.

“This isn’t about shrinking — it’s about making sure the Wendy’s system stays healthy long-term,” the company said. “Closing underperforming restaurants lets our franchisees reinvest in locations that are already performing well and bring stores up to today’s expectations for design, technology, and drive-thru service.”

The closures are set to start in late 2025 and continue into 2026. The timing comes as Wendy’s reports a 4.7% drop in U.S. same-store sales in Q3 of 2025, showing that not every location is hitting its stride. Many of the restaurants on the chopping block are described as “underperforming” and behind on modern updates.

For franchise owners, this move is a mix of tough love and opportunity. Some stores will close, but others can invest in upgrades or remodels, positioning themselves for long-term success. Wendy’s says this effort is part of Project Fresh, a strategy aimed at boosting profitability while ensuring the chain keeps up with competitors in an increasingly tough fast-food market.

For fans and regular customers, fewer Wendy’s locations could be inconvenient in some areas. But the payoff? Faster service, modernized stores, and a better experience at the locations that stay open.

Analysts say this move shows Wendy’s is shifting focus from growing just for the sake of growing to making sure the stores that survive are strong, profitable, and ready to compete. “It’s a smart move,” one industry expert noted. “Better to invest in stores that are already doing well than prop up ones that can’t keep up.”

Bottom line: don’t panic if your local Wendy’s disappears. Think of it as the chain leveling up — trimming the weak spots so the rest of the brand can shine.
