During her guest appearance as a featured speaker for The Ebony Canal documentary screening at this year’s Urbanworld Film Festival, Ms. Tina Knowles opened up about the role technology plays by providing valuable information and community for Black women especially during pregnancy!

Ms Tina, who attended in support of the film centered on Black maternal health and community advocacy, emphasized how digital tools and shared knowledge are helping close gaps in life-saving maternal care for Black women.

A “Google-Girlie” Like the Rest of Us🔎

Ms Tina revealed that, much like the rest of us, she is a Google-girlie and was put on to game by her Beyonce and Solange, who sometimes remind her that the internet can also throw you for a loop while you’re searching for necessary information.

She emphasized that having immediate access to information and digital communities has become a crucial resource for many Black expectant mothers.

Awareness Sparked Through Sisterhood ♥️

Ms Tina explained that conversations with other women — including Kelly Rowland, Erykah Badu, and others within her circle — have deepened her understanding of the urgent maternal health crisis affecting Black women today.

She acknowledged that even in privileged spaces, many women are still shocked to learn the severity of Black maternal mortality rates in real time.

“These are not just statistics,” she stressed. “These are real women who are experiencing harm, who are not being listened to, and whose lives are on the line.”

Technology as a Lifeline 📲

Ms Tina credited platforms like Irth, a digital resource designed to help Black birthing people access community-reviewed, culturally aligned maternal care, for pushing awareness and offering tangible support.

“Reliable information isn’t just convenience — it’s care,” she said. “To be able to go to that site and really feel that it’s valid information… we can pass on. I was very surprised that this was such a big thing.”

Mental & Emotional Safety Matter Too 🧠

Beyond medical advocacy, Ms Tina spoke about the emotional weight many Black women carry during pregnancy.

“To know that that can save someone’s life… not only is it important medically, but mentally,” she added. “A lot of times people go through pregnancies by themselves, and just to have that secure person… I’ve been in doctors’ offices where I felt unseen or dismissed.”
