Noir Nation! Starbucks is coming through with an all-new attitude for 2025! Following a recent update to their open-door policies, customers will now be required to make a purchase in order to occupy or utilize the beloved coffee chain’s amenities!
According to CNN, Starbucks’ new rule of thumb has been orchestrated in hopes of elevating their customer’s cafe experience while also addressing a growing issue regarding nonpaying customers.
Sources state throughout the years there has been an increase in activity of folks utilizing Starbucks as a public bathroom or for shelter needs.
Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol announced on Monday, January 13th a new code of conduct plan that will be implemented in all North American locations.
—” practical step that helps us prioritize our paying customers who want to sit and enjoy our cafes or need to use the restroom during their visit,” said a Starbucks spokesperson in a statement. “By setting clear expectations for behavior and use of our spaces, we can create a better environment for everyone.”
Additional changes include a ban on panhandling, discrimination, consuming outside alcohol, and vaping, reads the updated policy posted online.
Reports read that all Starbucks employees will receive training on the new policy which also allows for them to contact local authorities if necessary.
Starbucks’ previous open-door policy derives from a 2018 incident where two young Black men were arrested at a Philadelphia location for sitting without ordering. The incident was captured on cellphone footage and shared online, instantly going viral.
After receiving major backlash across social media, the company decided to make adjustments to their policies.
Niccol cites the new policy as a means to refocus and balance customer safety.
It has been confirmed that there is no minimum purchase requirement at this time and that customers can purchase something as simple as a pack of nuts or a granola bar to gain access to a table, restroom, or charging station.
