In the last few weeks, social media users and celebrities have announced their departure from Twitter (X)!

According to reports from The Hollywood Reporter, social media users have begun to exit Twitter in clusters due to Elon Musk’s involvement in Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. Sources state that Elon had previously offered financial incentives to people who voted for Trump while also voicing his support across the platform.

Just days after Trump directly appointed Elon the Department head of Government Efficiency, A-list celebrities including Gabrielle Union, Don Lemon, Jamie Lee Curtis, and more exited the app.

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change. Courage to change the things I can. And the wisdom to know the difference,” read a post from Jamie on Instagram as she declared her exit from Twitter.

“I have loved connecting with all of you on Twitter and then on X for all of these years, but it’s time for me to leave the platform,” said Don in a shared Reel on Instagram. “I once believed it was a place for honest debate and discussion, transparency, and free speech, but I now feel it does not serve that purpose.”

The former CNN anchor took legal action against Elon earlier this year back in August due to a scraped partnership deal with X reports USA Today.

Sources state that Twitter’s new terms of service have also played a part. According to The Independent,” disputes that arise between users and X as a company will be governed by the laws of the State of Texas.”

Don further expressed his thoughts regarding the new terms of service in his reel on Instagram. “As the Washington Post recently reported on X’s decision to change the terms, this ‘ensures that such lawsuits will be heard in courthouses that are a hub for conservatives, which experts say could make it easier for X to shield itself from litigation and punish critics,’” Lemon said. “I think that speaks for itself.”

In the same week Gabrielle shared a written statement to X where she thanked fans for their support, connection and conversations while announcing her departure from the app.

“There are pivotal moments in life when we must declare that enough is enough and for me, today is that day. Platforms like X were founded on authentic connections, true engagement and creative expression, all anchored in respect for user privacy and trust.”

“Yet, with the recent and upcoming changes to the terms of service — and the return of volatile figures — I find myself at a crossroads, facing a direction I can no longer fully support. I am committed to engaging in spaces that truly value inclusivity, respect and integrity in the digital world. Sometimes, that means recognizing the last straw and knowing when to step away.”
