As part of Vice President Kamala Harris’s open forum discussion with the National Association Of Black Journalists on Tuesday (September 17), she addressed recent polls that suggested Black male voters support of Donald Trump!

“I’ve often been asked this question in a way that I’ve had to respond by first saying that I think it’s very important to not operate from the assumption that Black men are in anybody’s pocket,” VP Harris began.

“Black men are like any other voting group: You got to earn their vote. So I’m working to earn the vote, not assuming I’m going to have it because I am Black, but because of the policies and the perspectives I have. I understand what we must do to recognize the needs of all communities.”

According to a newly issued Siena poll from the New York Times, approximately 17% of Black voters have declared their support for Trump while a lingering 9% remains undecided. A NAACP Poll has also determined that Black male voters under the age of 50 years plan on supporting Trump in this year’s election as well, reports The Root.

Though the Democratic party was able to sway the Black vote a part of Joe Biden’s 2020 run for office with a 92% turnover rate, Black males have been extremely vocal regarding their hesitation of Kamala’s presidential campaign.

Further in conversation VP Harris detailed her economic proposal focused on entrepreneurship advancement for Black men. “We have so many entrepreneurs in the community who do not have access to capital, but they’ve got great ideas, an incredible work ethic, the ambition, the aspiration, the dream … but don’t have the relationships, necessarily, to get financing or grow a small business.”

“When they do better economically, we all do better,” said Harris.

While detailing her plans to produce advancement and development in Black communities, VP Harris proposed a $50,000 small business tax deduction along with the elimination of medical debt from credit scores. She explained that taxes and medical debt have been a weighing factor in outsourcing Black communities.

VP Harris says she is also actively working towards “getting billions more dollars” into Black community banks to expand access to startup capital.
