Noir Nation; Legendary stylist and fashion architect, Misa Hylton appeared at this year’s Essence‘s House of Fashion to discuss the evolution of the industry and the value of remaining authentic!

While speaking on the ‘The Authenticity Code: Navigating Authenticity In The Luxury Market,’ panel for New York Fashion Week, Misa reflected on her career in fashion and how the industry often rejected Black style as being ghetto.

She says in today’s era Black styles and trends are considered popular aesthetics from fashion, hairstyles, and more.

Misa also expressed that the fashion industry has made strides for an impactful change regarding diversity as there are now more Black creatives on the drawing board.

She explained that within the 90s-2000s era there weren’t too many people who looked like her which often led to the crabs in a barrel mentality.

“We have to give back… to our community, to our people… to make sure that not only do we get a seat at the table, we’re able to stay in that seat and build longevity.”

Throughout Misa’s thirty-three-year career in styling, she has been recognized for her talents of transcending luxury streetwear and expressive art.

With an extensive list of celebrity clients ranging from Mary J. Blige, Lil Kim, Jodeci, and more; Misa has cracked the code to help Black communities gain visibility in the fashion industry.

Misa is also prioritizing the importance of educating the next generation of stylists and fashionistas through her Misa Hylton Fashion Academy. The Institute provides an insightful approach to education while assisting the youth to create a professional structure around their talent.

Misa says that she enjoys helping to share her experiences and skill set through mentorship while advising attendees to never be afraid to do the necessary work to get the job done.
