Cousins! If you were thinking about getting your family or friends some high-end luxury items in time for the holiday season, for the low-low you might want to skip New York City as police officials have began cracking down on vendors pushing signature knock-off items!
Earlier this week police officers hit Canal Street racking up over $10 million dollars in fake Fendi, Balenciaga, Christian Dior, Prada, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and more. According to NBC News, there were enough confiscated items to load up a total of three trucks in full capacity. Which also lead up to multiple trips back and fourth to the station house.
“At this location, we received numerous complaints from small businesses, local banks, community residents and the manufacturers of the high end goods you see here,” stated NYPD Chief of Patrol Jeffrey Maddrey.
In connection to the millions worth of mock-merchandise 17 people were arrested and charged with the felony act of trademark counterfeiting.
One of the vendors says that the Police are being unfair and giving people records for crimes that are beyond them.
“Police — they over here grabbing us all of the time. And they give us a record. They take us to jail,” said one of the vendors, Mouni Karamirv. “If you want to stop this, you stop from China. Not over here.”
Reports read that fellow vendors and pedestrians have called out officials recent crack down in saying that people selling the goods were only trying to make ends meet. In response Maddrey explains there is no legal justification for those vendors actions.
“Over the next few days, we’re going to partner up with our local businesses, our community partners and we’re going to explain the right way to obtain a general vendors license so people can go out there and make a living the right way,” stated Maddrey.
Police said all of the counterfeit items will be processed as evidence, which could take two days to fully get through.
