Cousins!
A Pennsylvania grandmother has come out of retirement at age 70 to be a lifeguard for the second time. Her motivation is to help get kids off the streets of Philadelphia and into the pool!
Due to a lifeguard shortage, only 50 of Philly’s 65 pools are open this summer — a problem for cities such as New York City, Chicago, New Orleans, and more.
Robin Borlandoe, 70, mother of three and grandmother to six, says she returned to lifeguard duties to create a safe environment for kids this summer after over 100 children under 18 have been shot in the City of Brotherly Love this year.
“I was a lifeguard when I was 16 and loved it,” Robin Borlandoe told NBC News. “I decided to finally do it to do something for our kids, our community.”
“They have no place to go,” Robin explained. “Pools are closed all around.”
She recalled a shooting that occurred outside her own home, resulting in three young boys’ tragic death.
“When you see it, it’s scary and it’s very sad,” she told the outlet. Borlandoe says her goal “was just to do something, no matter how small, to help out.”
Borlandoe told NBC News that she is very excited and committed to lending a helping hand to her community, “This is my reputation. This is my community.”
