Cousins!
A new law has been passed within the entire state of New York which will require back seat passengers within a vehicle to wear seatbelts at all times!
The newly passed bill was forwarded by the City Council sponsored by Ydanis Rodriguez at the request of Mayor Bill de Blassio reports The NY Post.
Sources have confirmed that the bill will serve as a traffic infraction that will consist of a $50 fine for any individual 16 years of age or older identified as not wearing a seatbelt. The previous bill only required 16 year olds+ to wear seatbelts within the driver and passenger seat.
Reports read that Chief of Trauma and Critical Care in the Department of Surgery at Albany Medical Center, Kurt Edwards states that the new law has the possibility to save lives.
“I don’t get to see a lot of the people who weren’t wearing seat belts in the back because they never make it to my trauma center…because they die,” Edwards says.
The new law goes into effect on Nov. 1, however officials wants to make sure drivers and passengers are able to receive a grace period for prior tickets. It has been indicated that law enforcement will only intervene after a car is already pulled over.
