Former NFL star and activist Colin Kaepernick is stepping up to support the family of Delta State University student Demartravion “Trey” Reed by covering the costs of an independent autopsy.
According to ABC 24 News, Cleveland Police Department (CPD) officials and the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy on Sept. 17 and determined the cause of death was hanging, concluding the action to be suicide

The finding has been met with deep concern from Trey’s family, who have publicly questioned the circumstances surrounding his death. From the beginning, the family has expressed unease with the information provided by police about how Trey was discovered, highlighting their need for clarity and truth during this devastating time.
Sources state they were initially told Trey was discovered deceased within his dorm. However Trey’s body was discovered hanging from a tree on campus.

Civil Rights attorney Ben Crump, representing the Reed family, announced on Friday, September 19, that they are pursuing an independent autopsy to ensure transparency. “Trey’s death evoked the collective memory of a community that has suffered a historic wound over many, many years and many, many deaths,” Crump said. “Peace will come only by getting to the truth. We thank Colin Kaepernick for supporting this grieving family and the cause of justice and truth.”
