In a sit-down with DJ Akademiks for his podcast “Off the Record,” French Montanna drops some pretty interesting comments on artists involving their record labels!
French Montanna revealed in the interview that record labels started taking out insurance policies on their artists “because of the rise in deaths,” according to Rap-Up.
The “Aint Worried About Nothin” rapper tells Akademiks, “We was beefing for real. People was like dying and this and that. It was blocking a lot of money. People didn’t want to touch you,” said Montana, who released his independent album Montega last month. “Somebody get shot, your rap friends stop picking up. The label stop picking up. It gets crazy.”
With the recent years of deaths among rappers, including Nipsey Hussle, Drakeo the Ruler, Young Dolph, King Von, and Trouble, could you blame them?
“Now it’s even crazier ’cause they getting life insurance on artists. At least back then we didn’t have that,” added French.
When DJ Akademiks asked the rapper if the labels were “signing an artist in good faith” if they take out the insurance policy, French believes it was another way to make a profit.
“You’re preying on his death,” he said. “You’re preying on making millions on his death.”
But French also agrees it is realistic.
“You’re supposed to have life insurance anyway, but when the label does it, if you don’t have one, that’s crazy.”
