Following 2020 pandemic related orders that halted the prosecution of low level crimes in efforts of stopping the spread of Covid-19 in jails, the city of Baltimore has officially declared to make these policies permanent!
According to The Insider the announcement was made on Friday March 26th as the success of last year’s policies showed and proved to be effective.
“The policies enacted over the past year have resulted in a decrease in arrests, no adverse impact on the crime rate, and address the systemic inequity of mass incarceration,” reads a statement forwarded on behalf of the state’s attorney, mayor, and community partners.
Sources have confirmed that drug possession, prostitution and urinating in public are also included in a series of low level crimes that’ll no longer be prosecuted.
“Today, America’s war on drug users is over in the city of Baltimore. We leave behind the era of tough-on-crime prosecution and zero-tolerance policing and no longer default to the status quo to criminalize mostly people of color for addiction,” says Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby.
“We will develop sustainable solutions and allow our public health partners to do their part to address mental health and substance use disorder.”
