Cousins! A Texas woman is piecing her life back together following a medical episode that tragically turned into a nightmare after being advised that she only had a few months to live due to a case of terminal cancer. However, an extreme misdiagnosis and months of aggressive chemotherapy have ultimately changed the College Station resident’s reality forever!

Lisa Monk says that she began to experience stomach pains in late 2022 and had sought medical attention as she expected the pains to be a sign of kidney stones.

According to KBTX News, Lisa underwent a routine CT scan which confirmed she had kidney stones as well as a mass on her spleen.

The following year in January, Lisa underwent surgery in an effort to remove the spleen mass and begin treatment. She says that the following series of events turned her life upside down as she met with unexpected news. “They said I had clear angiosarcoma, which is a blood-type cancer.”

Lisa recalls medical officials advising her that she had only 15 months to live and immediately began her battle against cancer following the heartbreaking prognosis. She says that she committed to multiple rounds of aggressive chemotherapy and underwent numerous hospital stays.

In April 2023 the wife and mother of two were delivered earth-shattering news during a routine follow-up appointment. Lisa says that a nurse practitioner left her stunned as she stumbled across the misdiagnosis, revealing that she never had cancer at all.

“I underwent a total of two rounds of chemotherapy and the Friday before I went in for my third round, I went to visit my doctor and just again, a routine appointment, just checking in before we go in for round three,” said Lisa. “the nurse practitioner was reading my file and talking to me, asking me about all my symptoms, all the nausea and vomiting and all the things that come with chemo.”

“She just suddenly stopped talking and she got a horrified look on her face. She said she had to get the doctor real quick. She ran outta the room, left me alone for about 15 minutes and the doctor came back in and told me that I never had cancer.”

Lisa says that she received a report confirming that she was cancer-free. However, the frustration she felt was only amplified as she said the error could’ve been avoided if additional lab work had been completed.

Lisa has expressed that though she is relieved to be alive and not have cancer, the emotional and psychological damage done is unrepairable. She says the aftermath of the entire ordeal has caused a financial strain on her family as a string of medical bills have since pilled up.

“They had ordered a second pathology, it’s their procedure to do their own in-house. And so when they did that, that was the result. My spleen was just gonna rupture. I had blood vessel activity in my spleen and that was all it was. It was never cancer,” said Lisa.

“It was dated a whole month prior. I had received an entire second round of chemotherapy two weeks after they had received the second pathology report,” Lisa said.

“I had gotten a copy of the pathology report and while I was talking to my husband about it and telling him everything that transpired, I started wondering like, when did they get the second pathology report? Because surely it didn’t come in while I was sitting there and it was dated a whole month prior. I had received an entire second round of chemotherapy two weeks after they had received the second pathology report.”

Lisa says that since receiving confirmation that she is cancer free, the doctor nor the hospital has taken accountability for the misdiagnosis.

“They told me congratulations. They never said we’re sorry that you went through this. We’re sorry that your family went through this. They told me congratulations, not once but twice.”

Lisa has decided to tell her story on social media in hopes of saving someone else’s life.

According to KBTX News, her story has gained national attention as people begin to focus on the growing issues of misdiagnosis in healthcare.

“It wasn’t just me that went through all of this. I am a mom, I’m a wife, I’m a sister, a daughter, a friend. I am all of these things and I am loved and everyone that loves me went through this as well,” said Lisa. “My children were preparing for my death. I was writing goodbye letters to them for the graduations that I wouldn’t be at the babies that I would never see, and the weddings that I would never attend.”

“It makes you wonder how many other mistakes are out there. How many times has someone been misdiagnosed or how many reports are sitting in someone’s inbox not being read because the doctors are too busy or there’s too many tests being run?” said Lisa.

“I don’t think that I can change the world because frankly, I don’t think I’m that special. But maybe I change their policies. Maybe I make them put in checks and balances. I make them hold these doctors accountable and this doesn’t happen to someone else.”
