Viola Davis Earns EGOT Status Following Grammy Win For The Audiobook To Her Memoir, ‘Finding Me’

Cousins! Legendary actress Viola Davis made history at the 65th annual Grammy Awards as she accepted her win for ‘Best Audiobook’ for her memoir “Finding Me” .

The night was legendary for Viola as she successfully earned her official EGOT status, making her the 3rd Black woman in history to do so. Whoopi Goldberg has been noted as the first recipient followed by Jennifer Hudson. John Legend is the very first Black male EGOT winner as well as the youngest in history.

According to CNN Viola won an Emmy award for her iconic role as Annalise Keating in the television series, “How To Get Away with Murder.” She also won an Oscar award for her role in the film “Fences” along with two Tony award for the film “King Headley III” and the Broadway production of “Fences”.

As Viola accepted her Grammy award for “Best Audio Book, Narration, and Storytelling Recording,” she paid tribute to her younger self.

“I wrote this book to honor the 6-year-old Viola,” said the 57 Year old . “To honor her life, her joy, her trauma, everything. And, it has just been such a journey – I just EGOT!”

She went on to thank her husband Julius Tennon as well as their daughter Genesis.

Prior to this year’s Grammy awards, Viola reflected on what accomplishing EGOT status would ultimately mean for her in an interview with the Recording Academy back in January.

“I think that everybody wants their life to mean something,” said Viola. “I believe in the Cherokee birth blessing, which is, ‘May you live long enough to know why you were born.’ I do believe that you literally wanna blow a hole through this world in whatever way you can.”

“A lot of people don’t know how to do that. A lot of people haven’t found that thing that they’re passionate about, that they can do,” she continued.

“ Some have But we all are looking for that, blowing a hole through this earth before we leave it. I think about that in my work a lot. I really found that thing that I love to do. So I always wanna make it meaningful.”

Viola’s career has been nothing less than inspirational to fellow Black women around the world as she’s often speaks of her struggle prior to fame. She’s been fully transparent upon the multifaceted obstacles she’s often been forced to face within the entertainment industry also.
