Social justice advocate and civil rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton has recently come forward to speak upon the issues of proposed vaccinations within the Black community both past and present!
As the country begins to swiftly interchange presidents, Sharpton speaks about the necessary conversations upon racial injustice and healthcare President elect Joe Biden will have to indulge upon within the pandemic.
According to News Week Sharpton notes that the pandemic hit Black communities the hardest due to systematic racism and lack of resources. He also identifies that when it comes down to vaccines Black people have often been dealt a bad hand throughout history.
“He must deal with the economic plight and he must deal with the racial disparity in COVID-19, Blacks and browns have been tested positive disproportionately and are dying disproportionately,” Sharpton tells local media outlets.
He goes on to state, “So even as we hear about the vaccines that are being proposed by Pfizer and others, one, the present president says that they would distribute the vaccine if it becomes available in this time period through hospitals and health centers.”
“But many Black Americans live in healthcare deserts, where there are no hospitals or healthcare centers in our area. So he must come up with how we will see equal distribution of vaccine.”
“Many in the African American community, we don’t trust vaccines because of past history like the Tuskegee experiment. He needs to deal with that health disparity, particularly in light of COVID-19, “ Sharpton concludes.
