Seven minors are facing criminal charges after reportedly attacking a woman and her son near a South Side Chicago Public Schools (CPS) elementary school last month.

According to ABC News, the attack involved verbal abuse followed by physical violence, with Corshawnda Hatter and her son being pulled to the ground and kicked by multiple children.

The minors charged with battery include three 10-year-old boys, a 10-year-old girl, an 11-year-old girl, a 12-year-old boy, and a 13-year-old girl.

In an interview following the incident, Hatter shared that she had reported ongoing harassment of her son to school staff over the past two years, but little action was taken. “For two years, and they have not done a thing,” she said. “Sometimes older kids would follow him home. They see me coming—they will run or tell security to say they are not there.”

In response, CPS issued a statement in November, emphasizing their commitment to student safety:

“Chicago Public Schools (CPS) prioritizes the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and families, and we are committed to building a physically and emotionally safe teaching and learning environment in every school. We are horrified by the attack on this family and are working collaboratively with City departments and agencies to provide support to the victims. School administrators, teachers, and support staff work with students to create an open environment where conflicts and grievances can be addressed. All members of our school communities, including staff, students, and parents, are encouraged to work together proactively to maintain a safe and calm environment.”

CPD officials confirmed that all minors involved were referred for counseling services and released from custody.
