Noir Nation, a Mount Vernon police officer with nearly 20 years of service is now facing the loss of his career and health coverage while battling kidney failure.
According to reports from ABC News, Officer Derek Williams, 45, is currently undergoing dialysis after developing severe health complications following the COVID-19 pandemic. Williams says he began experiencing serious medical issues after working double shifts for months in 2020.
Sources state that Williams’ doctors have medically cleared him to return to work under light-duty or desk-based restrictions. However, the Mount Vernon Police Department reportedly denied his request, informing him that no light-duty positions were available. Williams says he pleaded to work any hours he was physically capable of completing.
Earlier this month, Williams received a termination letter effective December 31 — a decision that not only ends his 19-year career but also cuts off his health insurance.
“I do nine hours of dialysis, seven days a week just to survive,” Williams said, explaining that losing coverage could quickly become life-threatening.
At this time, the Mount Vernon Police Department says it cannot comment on personnel matters.
Williams currently has a pending state disability pension application and remains on the kidney transplant waiting list.
