Tyler Perry and Actress Terri J. Vaughn Sued Over Netflix Series ‘She the People’

Tyler Perry is facing some serious legal heat as a Black creative is calling him out in a newly filed lawsuit upon claims that her work was allegedly copied!

📌 Here’s the rundown:

Aimee Allison, founder of the political platform She the People, is suing Perry and actress/producer Terri J. Vaughn, claiming the new Netflix series She the People is strikingly similar to a docuseries she previously pitched—with them.

Allison’s She the People is a national organization focused on uplifting the political power of women of color. She says the Netflix show’s storyline—a newly elected Black female lieutenant governor trying to make change—mirrors the mission and energy of her original idea.

According to the lawsuit:

Allison collaborated with Perry’s company Tyler Vision LLC and Vaughn back in 2021. She even pitched a full treatment and had a working title. Then suddenly, years later, She the People popped up on Netflix—without her.

📢 “There are always people watching… People who see the value in what you’ve built—and think they’re entitled to use it,” Allison shared on Instagram, making it clear she’s fighting for credit and creative ownership.

To make matters more intense, Perry previously tried to trademark the phrase “She the People”, but the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office denied it because Allison already owned it.

🎬 She the People premiered on Netflix on May 22, with Part 2 dropping August 14—but the legal drama surrounding it is already heating up.

👀 Why this matters: This isn’t just about TV. It’s about how Black women’s ideas, movements, and intellectual property are often sidelined or repurposed—without acknowledgment.
