According to a statement from her family to E News! Alice passed away last month on March 25th. The cause of her death has not been publicly shared at this time.

Alice, affectionately known by her friends and family by the name of “Tan,” created a legacy as a performer. She was a semi-finalist on NBC’s ‘America’s Got Talent’ back in 2010 and performed at numerous subway stations around New York City.

Tan was a pillar of the New York City singing circuit,” her obituary read. “She sang at various venues to include the subway stations, primarily at Herald Square for over thirty years. She was a paid singer at The Harlem’s Cotton Club for many years.”

The singer graduated from the Stewart County High School in 1969, and went on to get her teaching license from the New York State Board of Education. She taught at PS 134, reads her obituary obtained by PEOPLE.

Alice appeared on Showtime at the Apollo in 2005 and was featured in the award winning documentary Rize the same year.

In 2007, Alice secured an Emmy win for her role in the “Military Families’ documentary.

The 72 year old is survived by her two brothers — James D. “Jimmy” Ridley and Tommy Lee “Tom-Tom” Cherry — and two sisters, Julia Van Mater-Miller and Mildred Ridley Dent, along with twin grandchildren, Cooper and Maya.
