Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and President Donald Trump shared a few differences in opinion while discussing the rapid wildfire crisis in California and a plan of action on how residents can potentially move forward!
On Friday January 24 Trump alongside his wife Melania, Bass and fellow Los Angeles city council members came together within a roundtable discussion to explore options related to rebuilding efforts in Southern California.
Tension became noticeably high as Bass and Trump clashed over timelines in which evacuated residents should be able to return to their homes.
“We are going to do everything we can, slashing regulations, expediting everything so that people can begin the process right away,” said Mayor Bass.
Trump swiftly interjected as Bass spoke, while proclaiming that he is aware of the potential 18-month wait displaced residents may have to undergo.
“We know the one thing is they are saying they will not be allowed to start for 18 months.”
“That will not be the case,” Bass responded. “First, we have to take care, to make sure that there’s not that getting rid of the hazardous waste, cleaning things up, so that people can start right away.
“And just like you said, if somebody had their house destroyed and they’re going to rebuild essentially the same, maybe a little bit longer, a little bit higher, they really shouldn’t have to go through much of a process. So I want you to know that we are expediting that. We absolutely need your help. We need the federal help.”
Trump fired back to express that displaced victims being away from their homes for even a week at a time is too much.
“They want to start now. They want to start removing things and are not allowed to do it now,” said Trump.
According to reports from Fox News, there has been no confirmation of a 18 month wait for Pacific Palisades residents to rebuild, it has been noted as a circulated rumor.
Unfortunately, a common ground was not reached during Friday’s discussion.
Residents also noticed that California Governor Gavin Newson was not invited to Friday’s meeting despite greeting Trump at LAX earlier that afternoon.
