Following the three year anniversary of the late Nipsey Hussle, fellow artist and mogul Master-P has a message for folks that didn’t give the Los Angeles native his flowers while he was alive to smell them!
In a recent interview with Hip Hop DX, Master P spoke on the age old trend of how people decide to show an enormous amount of love and admiration to celebrities and public figures only after they die. He also expressed his feelings of how Nipsey’s music didn’t reach it’s full potential until after he was gone.
“I just think in our culture, it just natural that people just self-hate,” he told the outlet within a Zoom interview. “They don’t want to see somebody else make it until they gone. You don’t want to tell somebody they great while they alive. That’s the thing that I just couldn’t understand about Nipsey is that he was talented.”
The No-Limit records CEO explains that Nipsey deserved better and, “didn’t get everything he got until after he died.”
“He put the same record that sold millions of copies only sold 50,000 when he was alive and he couldn’t get it,” said Master P. “He was like, ‘Man, I put my all into this project.’ He was like, ‘Boss, I did it. This is it.’ And then when it didn’t happen, and just watching the people, this guy don’t know that his funeral was at the Staples Center.
“He didn’t know that he had that type of love. Let’s be honest, he was still in Inglewood and Crenshaw trying to figure it out […] People would tell him, ‘Well, I don’t think that you got it.’ What happened? I mean, it’s the same album. The same album that people love now. That’s the part that I don’t understand. That’s why we got to celebrate us while we here. Stop it with the fake love.”
Master P shares that he remembers the people that didn’t forward proper recognition to Nipsey before it was too late. He went on to express that he isn’t interested in calling them out but actually forgives them, and hopes that this tragic incident is a lesson to learn from.
On March 31st, 2019 Nipsey was shot and killed within the parking lot of his Marathon clothing store. Since his passing the father of 2 received back to back Grammys, countless music and community honors, dedicated tribute performances and more.
