Cousins!

Gas prices are skyrocketing across the nation, but lawmakers are proposing a plan that will give back to California residents!

In a recently issued announcement, California lawmakers have proposed a $400 gas rebate for every state taxpayer because of the increasing gas prices.

According to NBC BayArea, “Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris (D-Irvine) and several other lawmakers have come up with a proposal for $9 billion from the state’s budget surplus to provide a $400 rebate to every California taxpayer.”

Under the proposal, every California tax filer would receive a rebate, including residents who do not own or drive a vehicle.

“Many Californians are feeling severe financial pain at the pump and looking to California’s leaders for help,” Petrie-Norris said in a statement. “We believe a rebate is the best approach to directly put money in people’s pockets.”

Since the announcement, there have been mixed reactions surrounding the proposal, including Noah Pacheco of Pleasanton. “I don’t think it’s enough. I don’t think it’s enough money, especially in these hard times.”

On the other hand, California republicans tried to get lawmakers to sign a bill to suspend the gas tax for six months, but it did not work.

“I think this was a real missed opportunity for bipartisanship and working across the aisle to help every Californian in the state that is hurting from this,” said Matt Shupe, Contra Costa County Republican Party chair.

As a California resident, I do not mind the proposal. It might not pass. But fingers crossed.
