A new legislation is being formed and it stems from the 2017 law requiring low-income schools to provide students with free feminine products!

It looks like governor Gav. Newson has been on a roll lately since his recent recall election. The governor signed a dozen bills in place, including ethnic studies being a high school requirement and many others. Yet one in particular that has many women and people nationwide impressed, is high schools and colleges providing feminine products for free.

As previously stated, the bill stems from the 2017 law and expands from grades 6-12, community colleges, University of California systems, and California State Universities, for the upcoming 2022-23 school year. The bill also inspires private schools and colleges to follow suit.

“Our biology doesn’t always send an advanced warning when we’re about to start menstruating, which often means we need to stop whatever we’re doing and deal with a period,” says Democratic Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia of her legislation.

“Just as toilet paper and paper towels are provided in virtually every public bathroom, so should menstrual products.”

According to KTLA5 and Women’s Voices for the Earth, several other states are considering or have already required free menstrual products. Last year, Purdue University in Indiana offered free hygiene products in campus bathrooms.

The advocacy group PERIOD said in a statement, “California joins a growing number of states who lead the way in demonstrating that menstrual equity is a matter of human rights. No student should ever lose learning time due to their periods, period.”

Previously, California repealed the tax on menstrual products that reportedly cost women an estimated $20 million a year. Hopefully, other states can join California and other countries such as India, Britain, Canada, and Australia on tossing the cost of menstrual products.
