Following the release of her new hit single Transparent Soul earlier this year Willow Smith had announced that she would be officially moving forward as a Punk Rock artist.
The 20 year old also revealed that she had been a fan of Rock and Metal music since young, noting groups such as My Chemical Romance and Paramore as her all time favorites.
Within a newly released interview with V Magazine Willow revealed that her particular taste in music lead to her being labeled as different. She also believes that being a Black woman and liking Rock music could potentially effect her today as well.
“Being a Black woman in the metal crowd is very, very different on top of the pressures that the music industry puts on you,” Willow details her personal experience.
“Now, it’s like an added pressure of the metal culture, the metal world, and just rock in general. I used to get bullied in school for listening to Paramore and My Chemical Romance.”
Willow adds that the music she’s currently creating is, “representation that I can bring to the mix, I just hope that the Black girls who are listening to my music and listening to this album see that there’s more of us out there. It’s a real thing, you’re not alone. You’re not the only Black girl who wishes she could flip her hair to the side and wear black eyeliner, you know what I mean?”
