According to Yahoo News, Obama’s grandmother also known as Mama Sarah passed away Monday around 4am while being treated at the Jaramogi Ogina Odinga Teaching and Referral hospital located in Kisumu.
“She died this morning. We are devastated,” stated her daughter Onyango to local press officials.
“Mama was sick with normal diseases she did not die of COVID-19,” says a spokesman for the family by the name of Sheik Musa Ismail. He also stated that she had tested negative for the disease. He states she had been ill for a week before being taken to a local hospital .

President Barack Obama took to social media on Monday following the news to state, “My family and I are mourning the loss of our beloved grandmother, Sarah Ogwel Onyango Obama, affectionately known to many as “Mama Sarah” but known to us as “Dani” or Granny,”
He also took to Twitter with a throwback photo of him and his grandmother within a tweet that read, “We will miss her dearly, but we’ll celebrate with gratitude her long and remarkable life.”
Reports read that she will will be buried Tuesday before midday and the funeral will be held under Islamic rites.
“The passing away of Mama Sarah is a big blow to our nation. We’ve lost a strong, virtuous woman, a matriarch who held together the Obama family and was an icon of family values,” states President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Mama Sarah was well known for her selfless acts of education and caring for the wellbeing of orphans in Kenya.
