Noir Nation, twenty-five years ago this month one of the most iconic films ever written hit theaters changing the scope of the entertainment industry in showcasing the natural essence of Black love, friendships, relationships, and overall excellency!
With an undeniable cast of household names including Morris Chestnut, Taye Diggs, Nia Long, Sanaa Lathan, Regina Hall, and Terrance Howard, alongside arising talents such as Melissa De Sousa, Harold Perrineau, and Monica Calhoun it’s no mystery that the ‘The Best Man’ overall success has been able to withstand generations to come.
Originally released in 1999 the film secured over $34 million in box office sales instantly shattering stereotypical chatter regarding Black-led stories in cinema.
“It came out at a time when there were not that many representations of young African Americans that were not from the’ hood,” Perrineau said. “All our characters were just out of college, trying to find their way in the world, trying to figure things out. There was nothing stereotypical about them. They were folks we recognized that really had not been onscreen before.”
‘The Best Man’ franchise has been able to expand throughout the years as a major feature film and a limited series while successfully appealing to all audiences.
In 2013 the ‘The Best Man’ creator Malcolm D Lee released it’s sequel ‘The Best Man Holiday’ grossing over $30 million dollars in box office sales. Followed by the limited series, ‘The Best Man: The Final Chapters’ on Peacock.
In a recent interview with the LA Times, Perrineau shared much like the rest of us that he would love for Malcolm to give fans one more look into the lives of the iconic characters.
“———the secret plan is to see if we can get Malcolm to write one more chapter,” he says. “He might. Or he might not.”
