Cousins! Actress Idina Menzel is opening up about a few of the obstacles faced in her previous union with Taye Diggs that eventually led to them deciding to divorce!
While appearing in a recently debuted episode of the “Dinner’s On Me” podcast hosted by Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Idina spoke on her previous role in the original Broadway production of “Rent.”
She says that the two met while on set and tied the knot in 2003. They went on to welcome a son named Walker together and ultimately divorced ten years later in 2013.
“The thing that came into play more, I would say, and he’s talked about it too, is the interracial aspect of it,” Idina said. “When you’re in the theater, it’s just not a thing. We all love each other, sleep with each other and [are] best friends with whoever wants to be, whatever sexual orientation.”
Idina stated that they’ve always been supportive of one another, but she believes the pressures of the outside world in regard to them being within an interracial relationship had an opposing effect on Taye.
“I think he had his own stuff to deal with, with that,” stated Idina.
She expressed that once they ventured to the outside world beyond the dimensions of the theater community, things were extremely different.
“It seemed like there was disappointment in the community with him because he was married to a little white Jewish girl from some show that we don’t even remember. So I took that on, too.”
According to CNN, Taye also spoke on the former couple’s split in an 2014 interview. “I’d be lying if I said there weren’t times when I thought, ‘Oh, man, people are going to trip out [if we split].”
“Maybe they thought it was cute that we met in ‘Rent,’” he said. “There weren’t a lot of couples like us in the theater community—and I know there aren’t a lot of performers as talented as she is… and then you have the whole mixed [race] thing. It was easy for people to root for us.”
Idina is currently married to a therapist named Aaron Lohr. While Taye is reportedly engaged to reality television star and actress Apryl Jones.
