Cousins! Carlee Russell is dealing with the aftermath of her abduction story head-on as she’s officially turned herself into the Hoover Police Department following two misdemeanor charges!

According to reports from CNN, the 26-year-old has been charged with falsely reporting to law enforcement officers and falsely reporting an incident. Both charges can lead up to the possibility of one year in prison along with a fine of $6,0000.

She was later released on bail confirms Hoover Police Chief Nick Derzis at a news conference held early Friday afternoon.

As word of Carlee’s charges rapidly spread online users took to social media to express their disappointment. Chief Derzis shared that he was also disappointed in the Alabama resident’s actions and her lack of charges.

“I know many are shocked and appalled that Miss Russell is only being charged with two misdemeanors, despite all the panic and disruption her actions caused,” he said.

“Let me assure you I too share the same frustration,” he went on. “But existing laws only allow the charges that were filed to be filed.”

Sources state that as the investigation surrounding Carlee’s fabricated abduction story continues, it will be further handled by Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall.

“We don’t see this as a victimless crime,” said Marshall.

“There were significant hours spent, resources expended as a result of this investigation.” He also cited the “many men and women who are civilians” who helped search for her.

Chief Derzis said no charges have been filed against Carlee’s family or any other individuals at this time. Noting that charges may be filed at a later time as the attorney general’s office continues to its investigation.

As we previously reported Carlee’s attorney Emory Anthony revealed in a news conference held earlier this week that she had made the entire story up. He explained that there was never a barefooted toddler spotted nor was Carlee abducted and held hostage for 49 hours despite her previous claims.

“My client did not see a baby on the side of the road. My client did not leave the Hoover area when she was identified as a missing person. My client did not have any help in this incident, but this was a single act done by herself.”
