Cousins, do you remember when we reported Telsa had gotten sued over multiple acts of alleged discrimination?
Back in October, a federal jury awarded Owen Diaz “nearly 136.9 million in damages for racist incidents he suffered in 2015 and 2016 while working at Tesla’s plant in Fremont, Calif.” Now, the judge has reduced the price of the multi-million dollar lawsuit and unfortunately it is not as close to what Diaz was promised.
According to BET, U.S. District Judge William Orrick called the $136.9 million “excessive” and “unconstitutionally large.” He then ordered Diaz to only receive a whopping $15 million.
In a statement, Diaz’s lawyer Bernard Alexander says, “The award of $15 million is substantial but does not come close to reflecting the harm caused to Mr. Diaz, or the reprehensibility of Tesla’s conduct.”
Reports read that the initial promised award was a combined $6.9 million in compensatory damages and $130 million in punitive damages.
Diaz had previously worked as an elevator operator who said co-workers, including a supervisor, repeated and used racial slurs towards him. It has been stated that he bore witness to racist graffiti in the bathroom and derogatory caricatures of Black children within the workplace.
As of right now Tesla has not released a statement.
Diaz accused the trillion-dollar company of ignoring his complaints and that he plans to appeal the judge’s decision.
