The recent Hantavirus outbreak is quickly expanding into a nationwide health watch as officials continue tracking potential exposure!
According to the Maryland Department of Health, two Maryland residents are now under close monitoring after a possible exposure. While neither individual was actually aboard the cruise ship, they were on the same flight as a passenger later confirmed to be linked to Hantavirus exposure.
Even more concerning, officials note that additional individuals across multiple states including Arizona, California, Georgia, New Jersey, Texas, Virginia, and New York: are also being monitored after potential indirect exposure routes tied to shared travel environments.
The original exposure trace is connected to a passenger from the MV Hondius, prompting health agencies to widen their monitoring efforts as they work to determine how far the exposure chain may extend.
Health officials warn, that Hantavirus prevention is mainly about avoiding exposure to rodents and their waste, since that’s the primary way it spreads to humans. There’s no vaccine or specific cure at this time, so prevention is really about environmental control and safe cleanup habits.
