The #COVID19 crisis has granted numerous men and women throughout the country early release from prison within efforts of slowing down the overall widespread of the virus. Unfortunately a Michigan man who had been incarcerated for over 40 years never got to obtain his freedom again after passing away just weeks before his release!
William Garrison, 60 had been serving a life time sentence for a crime he committed as a teenager back in 1976 reports the Insider. William spent a total of 44 years behind bars after being convicted upon charges of first degree murder.
Sources have confirmed that he had been offered parole and an early release set for the month of May. Sadly he passed away before the day ever came. Reports read that though William never complained to anyone about obtaining any symptoms, he did in fact test positive for COVID-19.
Department spokesperson of Corrections, Chris Gautz, states that officials attempted to release William earlier this year with parole but, “He refused to leave prison. He did not want to be on parole, he wanted to wait and just walk out completely free from supervision in September.”
William’s sister Yolanda Peterson, tells local press that she already made arrangements for her brother to stay at her home upon his release.
“My brother shouldn’t have died in there like that,” she said. “He was trying to get free.”
