A Los Angeles family is mourning the devastating loss of Keith Porter Jr., a 43-year-old father of two who was fatally shot by an off-duty Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent on New Year’s Eve.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, the tragic incident unfolded as Porter was outside celebrating the arrival of 2026.
Authorities allege the off-duty agent, who lived in the same apartment complex, heard gunfire nearby and went to investigate. DHS claims the agent encountered Porter holding a long rifle and ordered him to put the weapon down. The agent further alleges that Porter fired at him, prompting the officer to return fire in what has been described as an act of self-defense, reports ABC 7 News.
However, Porter’s family strongly disputes that version of events.
Loved ones say there is no proof that Porter fired at anyone and argue that no physical evidence has been publicly released to support the federal government’s claims. Family members maintain that Keith was not threatening anyone and believe the use of deadly force was unnecessary and unjustified.
Community members have also raised serious questions surrounding the incident — including why the officer’s identity has not been released, why no body camera footage exists, and why transparency has been limited in a case involving the death of a civilian at the hands of a federal agent.
At vigils held in Porter’s honor, relatives described him as a devoted father, a provider, and a man who was deeply loved by his children and community. His sudden death has left a lasting void — especially for his two daughters, who must now move forward without their father.
As investigations continue between local law enforcement and federal authorities, Porter’s family is demanding accountability, justice, and the full truth surrounding what happened that night.
