During this year’s Urban World Film Festival, singer and actress LeToya Luckett got candid during the Ebony Canal documentary panel, sharing an emotional story about her pregnancy journey — including a terrifying moment that could have changed everything.
💬 Relating to the Documentary’s Message
While reflecting on the documentary, LeToya revealed that one young woman’s story about experiencing anxiety during her first trimester hit especially close to home.
“I felt the same way — trying to stay calm, focused, and hopeful, even when everything felt uncertain,” she shared.
LeToya said that although pregnancy is often portrayed as a joyful experience, the mental and emotional challenges behind the scenes are very real — and not enough women feel safe talking about them.
😔 A Frightening Moment in Atlanta
Her anxiety soon turned into a frightening reality while she was 17 weeks pregnant and filming in Atlanta.
“They told me I could have been having a pre-labor situation. I was having contractions,” she recalled. “And they warned me, if labor started now, there’s nothing we could do.”
That moment forced her to slow down and listen to her body — something that’s often difficult for women balancing demanding careers and pregnancy. The experience became a major turning point for LeToya, leading her to seek out a source of strength she hadn’t realized she needed.
💪🏾 Finding Strength Through Her Doula
LeToya credits her doula for helping her navigate one of the scariest times in her life — not just physically, but emotionally.
“Y’all think doulas are just there for the big day… but they’re therapists on the way,” she said. “I didn’t really have anyone else to talk to about my fears or anxieties, but my doula walked me through every step. She literally helped me get through those moments.”
💭 A Message of Healing and Support
LeToya’s openness during the festival offered a powerful reminder about the importance of emotional support during pregnancy — especially for Black women, who often face higher risks and limited access to care.
Her story continues to resonate with fans who admire her transparency, strength, and faith in the face of fear.
