Marvin Sapp is opening up about the backlash he’s been receiving following the resurfacing of a dated video of him requesting $40K from churchgoers!

While speaking on ‘The Rickey Smiley Morning Show’ on Monday (March 31st), Marvin apologized for the act while reflecting on his tone of voice. “People took issue with my tone, and looking at the video, maybe I was a little more assertive than I should have been, and I can apologize for that.”

Further in the conversation, Marvin revealed that he has been receiving death threats in response to the circulated clip and how it has affected his personal life.

The 58-year-old continued, “People have called my church and cussed me out. My staff are afraid because I’ve received death threats. People have come to our campus. They have come to my church to try to cause problems, issues, (and) challenges.”

As we previously reported, a 2023 video clip shows Marvin requesting $20 from thousands of attendees both online and in person at a church fundraiser with the initiative of a $40,000 donation. In the video, Marvin can be heard demanding church ushers to repeatedly close the doors.

“I said close them doors. Ushers close the doors, close the doors. Close the doors,” Sapp said. “We all gon’ leave together. Y’all ain’t going no place but to the restaurant.”

As the video of the incident continued to circulate online, Marvin released a lengthy statement online explaining that he was not trying to hold anyone hostage.

“The truth is, when finances are being received in any worship gathering, it is one of the most vulnerable and exposed times for both the finance and security teams,” explained Marvin. “Movement during this sacred exchange can be distracting and, at times, even risky. My directive was not about control it was about creating a safe, focused, and reverent environment for those choosing to give and for those handling the resources.”
