An investigation into the tragic hazing-related death of Caleb Wilson has received a recent update!

According to reports from WBRZ, Safiyy Abdul-Raif, Southern University’s assistant band director and President of the graduate chapter of Omega Psi Phi, has been placed on thirty days of administrative leave. A letter from the University recently confirmed that Safiyy was suspended two days after Caleb’s tragic death.

“Safiyy Abdel-Ra’oof has been on administrative leave (30 days) since Feb. 28, 2025,” a university spokesman said in an email to WBRZ last Friday, reports MSN.

Officials state that Caleb passed away on February 26th, 2025, following a pledging ritual. He was taken to a hospital after collapsing and later pronounced dead. Though an active investigation into his death is still underway, it has been indicated that the incident is being examined as a potential hazing as four other pledges witnessed Caleb’s final moments.

At this time three individuals have been identified and arrested in connection to Caleb’s death; including frat members Isaiah Smith and Kyle Thurman. Authorities state that they are currently facing criminal felony hazing charges. It has also been confirmed that fellow fraternity member Caleb McCray has been charged with hazing and manslaughter for punching Caleb during a ritual that caused him to collapse.

Pledges received instruction to meet at a warehouse located in Baton Rouge. They were then ordered to change their clothes and put on grey sweatsuits and line up. Sources state that pledges were punched four times by each member wearing boxing gloves.

Fraternity members originally stated that Caleb died in a park following a basketball game, however it has been determined that it was a cover-up.

Authorities state that Safiyy’s direct involvement in the fatal incident hasn’t been determined at this time.

Caleb was a junior mechanical engineering major and a trumpet player in the Human Jukebox marching band.
