DJ Unk also known as Anthony Leonard Platt’s passing was confirmed in an issued statement by Big Oomp Records founder Korey ‘Big Oomp’ Roberson Friday afternoon.
According to the New York Post, details regarding Unk’s passing have not been revealed at this time. However, it has been indicated that he suffered from health complications. In a previous interview with XXL, Unk revealed that he suffered from a heart attack in 2009 due to nonstop touring and poor daily habits including smoking and drinking.
“It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that we announce the passing of a true ATL legend, Anthony Platt better known as ‘DJ Unk,’” wrote to The Post in an issued statement. “We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the countless fans who were touched by his artistry and spirit.”
The statement continued, “DJ Unk was not just a legendary DJ, rapper, and producer, but a true cornerstone of our label, and the imprint that he left globally will be cherished forever.”
“We ask that you keep his family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. We also want to thank everyone who has supported DJ Unk and the Oomp Camp over the years.”
Korey concluded, “Rest in peace, Unk. You will forever be missed. Now walk it out!”
Unk’s wife also confirmed the news of his passing within a post to Facebook on Friday.
“Please respect me and my family. I just lost my husband and my kids just lost their father,”Sherkita Long-Platt wrote. “Our life will never be the same. I LOVE YOU ANTHONY FOREVER.”
Unk’s legacy contributed to the early 2000s sound of music in Atlanta with his hit songs ‘Walk it Out’ and ‘2 Step’ solidifing a spot on the Billboard Hot 100s. He also landed fan favorite collaborations with fellow artists Andre 3000, Jim Jones, T-pain and more.
