Tabitha Brown came through with a message this evening following reports that Target has decided to cut ties with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion policy programs in adherence with the Trump administration.
As we previously reported, DEI programs were introduced by various businesses in 2020 following the tragic murder of Minneapolis resident George Floyd. According to CNBC News, Target launched DEI programs as a part of their business model in response to Floydās death as their company was initially launched in Minneapolis.
Target CEO Brian Cornell previously stated that Floyd’s murder felt personal. He expressed that the tragic incident motivated him to provide Targetās diversity and equity programs.
āThat could have been one of my Target team members,’ said Brian in 2020.
In the last four years, Target has declared their eagerness to provide consumers with more diverse products from Black- or minority-owned businesses.
However, Target has now announced its decision to remove DEI programs. The retail chain recently issued a memo to employees that they will end their three-year DEI goals. Highlighting that they will no longer send reports to external groups like the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index.
As a longstanding collaborator, online users were eager to know Tabitha’s reaction to Target’s recently released memos.
āMany years of data, insights, listening and learning have been shaping this next chapter in our strategy,ā wrote chief community impact and equity officer at Target Kiera Fernandez.
āAnd as a retailer that serves millions of consumers every day, we understand the importance of staying in step with the evolving external landscape, now and in the future ā all in service of driving Targetās growth and winning together.ā
