BIG congratulations are in order for the ladies of the New York Liberty basketball ball team following a historic night as they took home their very first championship!
The New York Liberty squad secured a W after competing against Minnesota in game five with an overtime score of 67-62 Sunday night as part of the 2024 WNBA finals.
“I’ve been manifesting this moment for awhile, There’s no feeling like it,” Breanna Stewart said. “Credit to Minnesota, they gave us a tough series. The fans have been amazing everywhere we’ve gone. To bring a championship to New York, the first ever in franchise history, it’s an incredible feeling. I can’t wait to continue to celebrate with the city. It’s going to be bonkers.”
Former President Barack Obama, President Joe Biden, and Vice President Kamala Harris were among the million of viewers to send the ladies congratulations following their historic win.
“Congrats @nyliberty on your first WNBA title! Incredible finals, proving everyone watches women’s sports,” wrote Biden.
According to Yahoo Sports the Liberty made it to the WNBA finals a total of five times before, unfortunately listing each one including the previous season.
Players Leonie Fiebich hit a 3-pointer during OT and Nyara Sabally who secured 13 points, landed a layup making the crowd stand to their feet.
“Whoever scores in overtime first usually wins,” Liberty coach Sandy Brondello said.
The New York Liberty is scheduled to celebrate their win on Thursday, October 24th with a victory parade in NYC and at City Hall with a special ceremony.
