Cousins! Despite Usher‘s bombshell reveal regarding his previous relationship to Rozonda ‘Chilli’ Thomas and the hurt he had to work through after having his wedding proposal turned down. The TLC group member says she is too focused on the present to even blink at the past!
As we previously reported, Usher told People Magazine within a newly released cover issue that he was left heartbroken after Chilli turned down his request for her hand in marriage decades ago. Usher said that he spent years dealing with the loss and that it led him to think he could never trust women again.
“I was a young man, and she had very specific rules that didn’t work for me,” he says. “We were missing each other. I really did want to have a different type of relationship where she was there with me, and she couldn’t be. She didn’t believe that I was actually in love with her as much as I was.”
He explained, “I wanted to marry her. I proposed and she told me no. I went through a great deal of pain after that, not trusting women or wanting to open up.” He admits, “I hurt her too,” but the situation “broke my heart.”
Following the widespread story, a source close to Chilli says,” Chilli is unbothered by the recent hoopla involving her past relationship..”
According to PEOPLE, as the story picked up major traction online Chilli alongside her boyfriend Matthew Lawrence were busy boo-lovin on a tropical getaway at the Sandals Dunk’s River in Jamaica. They are also said to have spent Valentine’s Day there with a private dinner.
Chilli and Matthew began dating during the holidays in 2022, she previously confirmed in an interview. She says that they get along so well due to their openness within communication.
“Obviously we both are like, ‘Man if we had met years ago’ and all that. There’s our time, and then there’s God’s time. When you go through more stuff you really appreciate that person so much more. You cherish the relationship in a different way. I’ve never experienced anything like this,” said Chilli.
